going green and social

Last night I watched another episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (Yes, I know, a bit embarrassing) and it made me think about a few things. For all of you who don’t know the show a short summary:

People who did something good or happened something bad and live in a house that nearly breaks down get a new house built.

So, yesterday I watched the latest episode about a woman with 4 kids from Jamaica who helps a lot in her Neighbourhood. And when they deconstructed her house they put all stuff aside that was still usable and brought it to some company that reused it. That’s pretty cool.

So that reminded me of some stuff I was already thinking about more often. First, I don’t like how we waste the ressources of our planet. (yes, I say “we” as I’m still far from perfect myself) So I thought about how to do it better. Like, how to reuse the stuff I have to give it a new purpose. For Example I have a few old computers at home I won’t use anymore. So I might make some stuff out of it’s parts like Jewelry or so. (that raises the geek’s heartbeat 😀 ) Or maybe reconstruction with clothes from flea markets…

Another thing is, how to avoid trash before creating it. I read already a bit about that but it’s still hard to think of everything and do it.

And then the interpersonal trash. We really should take care about each other more often. Do stuff for others even tho we don’t have a personal benefit out of it. (except maybe happyness about helping others). I thought about what I could do about that. It starts with donating blood or registering for a bone marrow donation (that’s for the brave). Or maybe donating time for a nice project. Maybe for old people… or kids. I would want to do something with kids as they are our future. (That sentence makes me think that im sooo ooold) I thought about something to show children how fun it can be to read a nice book or something like that. Books aren’t cool anymore for them and that’s a pitty as they miss out a lot. And it should be fun, to learn something new. Not sure yet, how to turn that into a project.

Any suggestions? Who want’s to join? 🙂 Or do you do already something nice and wanna share it with us? (Or something for me to join)

my geek project – episode 2

So Tuesday I went buying fabrics. This is some kind of love-hate relationship for me. Yes,  I know… you wanna know why. This has a few reasons.

1. I’m a poor student. That means I go to a store where they sell cheaper fabrics. I have a store around the corner that sells fabrics but at awefully high prices. So I go to another store. Unfortunately this one is out of town. That means about 45 min. (at least) with public transports including trains. At least, this time we were clever enough to look at the arrival times of the train back home, before we went into the shop. Last time when we arrived at the station, the friendly train conductor waved us good by while driving ahead. (Yes, we all love the ÖBB*……………NOT!)

2. When you enter the store for the first time, you don’t think that you are in the right building. At the ground floor you feel like entering a dungeon. Everything dark, COOOOLD and dirty. Every time you touch anything to look at it you regret it later. Also some of the fabrics down there are still labeled with Schilling (we changed to Euros in…2002?) so I guess you can imagine how it looks like there. But it still is worth to go there as you sometimes find a bit of what you need. I for example found a black umbrella which I need for a later cosplay costume in summer what is perfect – one piece less to buy.

3. Then you go upstairs to the first floor and everything is different… Ok, not everything..but it’s much lighter, a bit warmer and you have at least some kind of order. Even tho the order consists of labels like “Black and white fabrics ->” or “Jean, animal print, thick cotton ->”.. like.. this could be pretty much everything. But after a while you get an idea where you have to look for the stuff you need. Unfortuately you have to pass a lot of other shelves and look at everything on the way there what is the reason for…

4. On your way through all the corridors you see loads of fabrics and sometimes nice ones you didn’t plan to buy but they get your attention and you instantly see something in your mind that you wanna create with it (ok, maybe this is just me) and you instantly grab it and want to have it. And this again is connected with..

5. The ugly, mean, cashier desk of hell. Everytime I put my fabrics and other stuff (they also have tons of buttons, ribbons, threads,..) at the counter I pray to god  (thats not average for me as I’m not really that much into religion) even tho every single piece “only” costs 1 euro or 2, maybe 3… but in the end, most of the time its a long list with a (too) long number of digits at the end. (Did I already mention that I’m a poor student?)

But at the other hand I really love shopping fabrics. It feels a bit like beeing at Project Runway just without the stress…oh wait. Not this time. Because the friend I went with, suddenly found out that he has to get the 4 o’clock train to be home on time to be picked up by his parents. (it was 3:30) So we finally had to hurry to get the train. We were at the station at 3:58 .. puh! Good that I don’t smoke but I still should do more sports. (When did I do Sports active lately btw?)

When we were on our way back my friend told me, that now that he has to hurry, he can’t come with me back to my place but the stuff he bought had to go to my place. So I was packed like a donkey on my way home and really happy when I arrived there! (just packed like one, not being one!)

Oh and regarding Project Runway I found out last night that the 7th season started last week. Wohoo! That means today is the second episode of it. I’m so looking forward to see. It’s such an inspiration. Because of last episode I tryed something new yesterday at the studio and it worked out. I did a fabulous new piece. Unfortunately I still only have ugly cellphone pictures. These are to emberassing to upload as they are all blurry and overall not showable. But I plan to do a photoshoot with a friend of mine soon. So exciting!

My new geek project

I always have a lot of projects running simultaniously but one of my bigger ones with a due date I just started planning is

*drumroll*

my first Cosplay costume ever.

Ok, for those of you, that aren’t as geeky as me or in another way I explain a bit about this Cosplay thing as I think some of you might sit in front of the screen now with a big questionmark above their heads. (no, not questgiver-wise for the mmorpg geeks among us :D)

What is Cosplay?

Imagine loads of people dressing up like Characters of Animes, Mangas, Computer games,… and attending Conventions even tho it’s not carnival. THIS is Cosplay :). And yes, for all of you that are not into that it might sound a bit crazy :D. But it’s fun and I’m so looking forward to doing my first costume.

It’s not only about having it in the end and wearing it that makes me want to do it. It’s also the process of creating it that makes me feel excited. Beside I always loved it to dress like someone else during Carnival and now I have the opportunity to do it all alround the year. Ok, not all around as most Conventions in my area are only in summer, but you know what I mean.

My Project

sewingSo, I’m not revealing what I’m going to do for my first costume yet, but at least i decided now, what to do. It took me ages as there are so much options. As the first convention is already end of february I decided to not do my favourite one rather than one I like too and is a bit  simpler, so that I can be pretty sure that I’ll be done with it on time. Beside I promised a friend of mine to help him with his costume too, so it’s going to be a busy holiday month in February.

So what I’ve done about it so far is:

  • decided for a Costume
  • wrote down what I need to buy
  • made up an appointment with the friend I’m helping to go shop for fabrics and stuff (I’m so looking forward to this)

what I have to do:

  • get fabrics, zippers, a wig,..
  • SEW!!

I plan to post updates how it goes on with the project, maybe with pictures along the way and the final result in the end.

I also thought about doing something about helping others to finish their costumes… or make them for them.. but thats a bit  complicated as a lot want to attend contests at the conventions and for that the costumes have to be made by themselves so I’m not sure if this would be a good idea. But maybe people at LARPs (Live Action Roleplays)?

I would love to hear what you think about or your stories about cosplaying :).

Computergeeks and sports

So, what do computergeeks sportwise? Yes, “not any” is another answer for that question. But what do they do if they DO sports?

Geeks and fashion

Lately I came up with the Idea of Geekfashion. Then I was asked. What is it? And I opened my mouth and…… nothing came out. So I will try to do some kind of reverse engineering in this post and hopefully in the end there is some result about that question. Continue reading

Diamonds are a girls best friends!

Or, if you dont have diamonds, what are a girls second best friends? Right! Shoes. This is why my first thread will be featuring a video I recognised lately. I really like the clothes she is wearing and especialy all that shoes in it.

Besides, this is my very first post at the very first day of the year, so its a perfect match with the song as it says “365 days of the year”.

As I just came home from New Year’s Party I keep this post short.

Happy New Year to all of you!
